Two-thirds of the trekkers in Nepal visit the Annapurna region. The area is easily accessible, hotels in the hills are plentiful, and treks here offer good scenery of both high mountains and lowland villages. Central Nepal is dominated by the Annapurna Himal and the village of Pokhara. Pokhara is a good starting point for trekking in Nepal. The entire Annapurna range, more than 7600 sq km, was declared ‘Annapurna Conservation Area’ and is the first and also the largest protected area of Nepal. The region is rich in biodiversity and is a treasure house for 1,226 species of flowering plants, 102 mammals, 474 birds, 39 reptiles and 22 amphibians. It contains world’s deepest river gorge – Kali Gandaki Gorge, which is 3 miles long and 1.5 miles wide. The region contains world’s largest rhododendron forest in Ghorepani. Tilicho lake, located in Manang — north of Annapurna massif, is the world’s highest altitude fresh water lake. The area ranges in altitude from 790 m (2,590 ft) to the peak of Annapurna I at 8,091 m (26,545 ft).
